Troubleshooting • Re: SD Card Copier hangs on "preparing partitions"

I've been running a couple of RasPis for a year or two, and regularly make a COMPLETE image backup of the Pi image (on an SSD) by using SD Card Copier to copy to a second SSD

This HAS been working just fine

However, this evening the copy seems to start as usual (and I see disk activity on the target SSD), but after about 20 seconds that disk activty stops and, apart from the Pi still consuming about 20% cpu, NOTHING sees to happen. I certainly don't get as far as the "% copied" dialog

How do I figure out what's going on?

I do try and keep my RasPi up to date, and the only thing that's changed since I last did a backup is that I've done at least one "upgrade"

Suggestiona and advice gladly welcomed :(

Thanks
FWIW, glances (once installed) might provide some insight in to any "bottlenecks" - see 3rd. and 4th. screenshots here: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_p ... sMyPi.html
(in particular the DISK I/O "block")

Thanks Trev

Glances shows me a HUGE i/o wait which disappears when I hot-unplug the target USB drive!

Snag is, when I reconnect the USB, my Pi hangs totally

There is something really hokey going on here - I may just leave it for tonighgt dig deeper over the weekend

Stupid computers
What USB3-to-SATA adapter is in use on the target drive? What chipset? (not JMicron!!!)
It might be worth trying this "quick test":

and, for further comparison, notes for some of the USB3 "drives" etc. I have are here:

(you'll need to scroll past some "not a drive" devices)
