Thanks. Apart from the discussion about resetting the VL805, I have some new info: It seems the USB stack experiences problems, either periodically, e.g. because of EMI, or by user action when for example unplugging a device. Here's the really weird part: only the 1.1/2.0 devices don't enumerate afterwards. The Via Labs root hub will be gone from 'lsusb'. Again, after a reboot everything is fine. But: everything USB3.1-related will keep working. For example, a connected 3.1 hub does come back, but not the (1.1/2.0) devices plugged into it.
Could it be that the xHCI module 'hangs' or such, and that the VL805 still works as it should (this would explain why the 3.1 stack keeps working, b/c afaik 'underwater' this is 'just' pcie and handled by a different kernel module? Please correct me if I'm wrong - this is not my expertise)
I've also found fake Prolific chips can crash the USB controller/stack, which might be an issue with some clients (but not all).
I'm attaching some dmesg-output from a recent failure. This client was using a known-genuine FTDI cable (not Prolific) but does have the same (EMI prone) hardware layout. The 2.0 failure occurred right after unplugging the only plugged in device (USB hub, connected to the rest of the devices).

Could it be that the xHCI module 'hangs' or such, and that the VL805 still works as it should (this would explain why the 3.1 stack keeps working, b/c afaik 'underwater' this is 'just' pcie and handled by a different kernel module? Please correct me if I'm wrong - this is not my expertise)
I've also found fake Prolific chips can crash the USB controller/stack, which might be an issue with some clients (but not all).
I'm attaching some dmesg-output from a recent failure. This client was using a known-genuine FTDI cable (not Prolific) but does have the same (EMI prone) hardware layout. The 2.0 failure occurred right after unplugging the only plugged in device (USB hub, connected to the rest of the devices).
