I had gone through that readme, but wasn't eager to complete a full install.Have a read through What to do if your camera is not detected
And note the comments on gpu_mem, camera_auto_detect, start_x and particularily the OS release versions.
Your main problem is that Buster pre-dates the release of the GS camera so has no drivers or tuning file for it.
Best solution is to upgrade to a more recent OS release.
I followed your advise, installed the latest OS, and it works.
