I'd take a bet that this could be written using less physical memory.
Going back to that; I would suggest that if that can't be done for Rust, can only be achieved by tweaking swap space or whatever; then it isn't a very good advert for Rust.

I imagine it can be done and making it do so would be a good exercise in assessing how much better or easier Rust actually is.
Searching on "mmap in rust" using DuckDuckGo unsurprisingly turns up 4 distinct mmap libraries. Which one to use is not clear, but the capability for Rust to do such things is.
