I think I'll try this. Is there a correct/supported way to apply a custom edid? i.e. specified in a config?
It uses standard linux ways. Which means cmdline.txt. This is a good guide to video related command line settings.

You want: "drm.edid_firmware=edid/your_edid.bin" in cmdline.txt.
I've used this to create edids successfully.

The "Forcing modes" section may also be useful.
This has worked brilliantly. AW EDID Editor has been especially useful - the input page for "Detailed Timing" shows the calculated H. Clock and V. Clock, which has helped me understand a lot better how to write timings that fall within the operating range of my monitor. And finally it's great to be able to use vc4-kms-v3d for my purposes. Thanks!
