Probably a stupid question but I've been all day looking looking for and not finding an answer.
RPi 5 running Pi OS undated daily. Running X because I don't think Wayland is ready.
On my desktop amd64 machine, the screen blanker cuts power to the screen, so for instance if the room is dark there is no light at all visible from the monitor. But the blanker does not kick in if, say, I'm watching a movie.
The screen blanker in Pi OS also cuts the signal to the screen such that it powers down. Good so far. But unless there is keyboard or mouse input, it shuts the screen down even if there is activity onscreen. It is this last part I'd like to prevent.
Is there a setting someplace that remedies this? If not, is there an app that does this? It would be okay if it went dark if one paused playback for 10 minutes, but not during actual motion playback.
Alternatively, a way to turn on the screen blanker manually, without crossing the room to manually turn off the monitor.
SOLUTION (I tried to delete the post but cannot.) Install xscreensaver and set it to go blank. It won't kick in if video player or browser is running. Of course, I found this immediately after posting the question. You can also change the time and are not stuck with the default 10 minutes.
This solution works only when running X. Doesn't work with Wayland, which presumably will one day have its own way of doing things.
