rpdom and thagrol,
Apologies. It must be frustrating to work with the illiterati of which I am a full member.
During my whole RPi life of a few years, I never heard of "sudo apt full-upgrade" .
I only ever used "update and upgrade" . Now, with thanks for you two for scratching your heads in the confusion I created, I read up on why my kernel was so out of date. It seems that only a full-upgrade will update the kernel, and just "upgrade" will not.
Sorry for the confusion, but thanks for the education. That probably explains my initial difficulty with HD mounting.
Just now, before full-upgrade:
:~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 6.1.0-rpi8-rpi-2712
#1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 1:
6.1.73-1+rpt1 (2024-01-25)
aarch64 GNU/Linux
after full-upgrade and reboot:
:~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 6.6.28+rpt-rpi-2712
#1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 1:
6.6.28-1+rpt1 (2024-04-22) aarch64 GNU/Linux
