At first, I chose the "custom image" option in rp imager (kali linux arm) and when trying to burn it on a 128GB micro sd card, it got bricked to the point of no way of fixing it. Then I tried with two new micro sd cards (64GB), one of them bought today so straight out of the box, with a dozen different OSes (mostly from rp imager's menu) and the result is this:
1) Sometimes I get an "error writing to disk" during burning and don't even get to the booting part.
2) Sometimes the first part goes well but after inserting the sd card into the pi and powering it, I can't get any OS to boot properly and get the pi working. A few Raspberry Pi OSes rendered something like a white "welcome to raspberry pi os" graphic a moment after powering the pi, and then nothing else happened, no actual booting. Kalis mostly ended up with kernel panic, with an honorable mention of the one that booted for 40 mins and ended up with a blinking underscore on a black screen. The latest boot I've done, also with Kali Linux, went on for 50 mins, showing mostly 'OK's, some 'FAILED's and stopped for a long time on certain jobs, but after those 50 mins I finally got to the login screen. I had to wait for a minute between each typed character, that's how long it took, and when I got logged in, basically nothing was working. I got a message: "Unable to load a failsafe session. Unable to determine failsafe session name. Possible causes: xfconfd isn't running (D-bus setup problem); environment variable $xdg_Config_Dirs is set incorrectly (must include „/etc”), or xfce4-session is installed incorrectly." That's the furthest I've gotten after two days of fighting this nightmare.
I tried:
1) Different micro sd cards
2) Different card readers and micro usb cables
3) Two image burners - rp imager and rufus
4) Burning the image both on Windows (rp imager and rufus) and on Linux (rp imager)
5) Using both custom images and those provided by rp imager
6) Different OSes - Raspberry Pi OS (64, 32, Full, Normal, Legacy, Light, all of them), an Ubuntu image, Kali Linux images both by choosing custom Kali Linux images and those provided by rp imager
7) Different versions of rp-imager (the newest one seemed to throw errors the most, the older ones were working better)
8) Making sure the pi is powered correctly
9) Formatting the card after unsuccessful boots (yeah, I know it gets wiped clean during burning)
Please help me before I go crazy. Ideally, I'd like to have Kali Linux there, but RP OS would be ok too.
