that book is from 2019, you may not realize how much changes has happened in linux/raspberry since then
what raspberry os version are you using
there are several versions of the latest
latest 32 or 64
latest lite or desktop
alsa should be there on a lite install ( alsamixer is the tui interface, check if it's muted and at a level you can hear )
on the desktop it has long passed to pulse audio & soon to be passed to pipewire
