Hey do you mind showing the commands and tools you used when you mentioned "old tools". Im looking to achieve the same.
I'll have to go back through my notes and assemble everything, but yes I will post my solution.
First, this has been long enough ago that I don't remember everything I did to make this work. That being said I don't have a log of every command and step I used to resolve this issue. What I do have are a couple of links that I combined as a guide to get a hotspot going. This is very much a "your mileage may vary" situation, and the links I'm posting are not 100% step by step. Some of the information referenced in the second document does not line up with Bookworm so you have to fiddle a bit. I also seem to remember that one of the packages I needed to make the hotspot work wasn't installed. Once I figured that out and installed it, then things started to click and I was able to make it work. I think it was IPTABLES, but I can't be sure.

The first thing I did was follow this post which discusses turning off Network Manager and installing dhcpd.

Then I followed this post to build a hotspot:

I hope this helps.
Interesting...before NM became the standard; I used to do the opposite...i.e install NM and remove dhcpcd. I found NM to be much easier.
