Database. You need speed. The fastest on a Pi 5 is an NVMe SSD in a PCIe adaptor with PCIe set to speed 3. The speed is blinding. Things finish before you hit enter.

If you stay with USB, you get half the PCIe 3 speed less the 10% overhead of USB. The best microSD card is about a tenth of cheap USB SSD speed. There is really no reason to stick with microSD card if you have an SSD.

The reliability of USB SSD is dependent on the SUB chip in the enclosure and some are BADDDDDD!

A USB enclosure for a good SSD is not much different to the cost of a PCIe to NVMe adaptor. Go adaptor!

The only time I use microSD in a Pi with SSD is to test a million tiny system configuration changes. (Caused by Bookworm switching to Network Manager.)
Thanks. This was what I was thinking. I might just keep the SD to periodically back up the MySQL database, and node-red code, which aren't that big.
