Which version of Pi?

Pi0-4 are limited to 1Gbit/s per CSI-2 data lane, of which there are 2 exposed on the Pi HQ camera module. That limits the maximum pixel rate.
Pi5 supports officially up to 1.5Gbit/s per lane, so can go faster.

A back burner project for me is increasing the link frequency, which means Pi5 could support higher frame rates. https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/pull/6208
Rereading my notes there I see that one tweak allows up to "2028x1080 [60.99 fps - (0, 440)/4056x2160 crop]" on the standard link frequency, which would give you 1080p60. Pi0-4 can't encode at that rate unless everything aligns, but it should be able to display it fine.
