I originally booted the card in the Zero 2W, did the config.txt change, ran rpi-update, confirmed it still didn't boot in the Zero 2W, switched to the 400, logged in to confirm it was fine, then issued poweroff.
Are you saying Zero 2W doesn't boot after the latest rpi-update?
Does it still fail with:

Code:

[ 4.431990] sdhost: log_buf @ 00000000aba80ba3 (c28d7000)[ 4.439418] sdhost: failed to remap timer
(that code should not exist now), or something else?
Sorry, no. That was from earlier. I just tried a fresh "rpi-update next" on that card and it is now booting in the Zero 2W. Thank you :-)
