If you want to retain the spirit of the old radio I would use an amplifier with a volume potentiometer and fit that pot into the radio in place of the original.
A bigger question is what audio do you intend this to play? Analog radio is in decline.
You can find amplifiers with FM radio Bluetooth and MP3 player functions.
You could use a RPi as an internet radio and Bluetooth and MP3 player
If you wanted period radio shows on your period radio you could try radio archive sites.
e.g. https://archive.org/details/ClassicRadioShows
https://www.bbc.co.uk/archiveservices/a ... rcial-use/
It would be hard to utilise the radio tuner knob & dial to select what to play in an authentic way.
