Thank you. I am not running on USB but on SD cards. My NVME PCie card and drive are on backorder. I am hoping, the bug in Ubuntu you mentioned will be fixed by the time it comes in.
After more than 4 different attempts, I realized it might be wise to try a different SD card USB adapter I had stashed away. Due to tight quarters, it had to be connected to a hinged adapter I could find in my stash.
Everything worked flawlessly. I now had a 60GB Ubuntu 23.10 Desktop and a 120GB full RasPiOS running. I am updating the latter now.
The partprobe delay issues makes sense based on my experience. The 'reply' line would introduce a delay. And the change in the USB adapter hardware could ahve resulted in a faster repsonse.
I will check out your test script tomorrow on another card. The third OS I am interested in is the recalBox gaming system. They have a beta for the Pi 5 that works. But their partition scheme is unusual. They have the boot with the active OS file system small and a third large exFAT for game BIOSs and ROMS. I have extra cards. I sure don't want to wreck this current setup until I know recalBix works. If it works, I have 58GB still free on the main card.
Down the line, I prefer to do only a little SD card swapping. I don't know how well the board connector would last.
Currently, the Pi 5 is purely a toy waiting for a purpose. But I sure have spent a lot of time on this. Like all engineers, I am stubborn.
Again, thanks.
