Does the printer have an SD card slot or USB port for you to plug in a Flash drive?It's an old HP Laser jet P1006. It has always worked with windows systems. It's only usb & cannot be networked.
I have come across the same sort of problem with the HP OfficeJet units and Mac laptops where, when the printer is plugged in to the laptop, the laptop tries to boot from the SD card slot on the printer. If the printer is disconnected or turned off the laptop will boot properly but not otherwise. It sounds like it might be a similar problem with your printer.
