The software change does not fully allow the program to start on boot without pressing the power button from my attempts. Anyways I got my solution to work by building a circuit which shorts the J2 pads for ~0.2 seconds. The key was a pull up on the transistor collector node to 3.3 where it also goes to the J2 pad.
