You should install the Lite version which will boot to the command line (or run headless and connect via ssh).
Get the 32-bit "Legacy" version from here:

Raspberry Pi OS Lite runs well on a Pi 1 - even the 256MB version.
If you ever need the desktop, then get a Pi 5!
