Troubleshooting • Extremely slow VNC response in Chromium - Bookworm (Raspberry 5 using X11)

Hello all,

I am a Raspberry newbie. I have previously worked with a headless Raspberry 4 running Bullseye and was using RealVNC.
There is a well documented problem in that scenario, where certain apps (for example Chromium) are extremely slow. However, there is a solution, which I had also used successfully.

I am now trying to setup a Raspberry 5, and would like to use RealVNC again because it did work well and is easy to use over internet.

VNC Server does not currently work out of the box on a Rasp 5 due to Wayland, so I had to choose X11 (one of the recommended "solutions").

Real VNC server works now and I can connect, however I have extremely slow response when using Chromium. A terminal window for example, works fine (no delay).

I am not sure if I can apply the same solution in the new OS (running X11, if that makes any difference).

The /boot/config.txt file has moved (is under boot/firmware) but most importantly, it does not have the line

Code:

hdmi_force_hotplug=1
.

The other two lines do exist:

Code:

#dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d#max_framebuffers=2
I searched around in similar threads, for example here, but could find something definite. Also, I really don't know if my (necessary) choice to run X11 instead of Wayland somehow changes things.

Should I uncomment those two lines in /boot/firmware/config.txt and somehow 'force HDMI' from somewhere else?

Thanks for all your help, and sorry for not being more specific, I am quite new to Raspberry Pi and this is my first post here.
