If next year some company creates a 12V 5A PSU that can feed SSD + 3.5inch HDD + Pi5 + PCIE-SATA bridge, I might consider making a NAS with a Pi5. My current one is an Intel board with 2x SATA and 16GB RAM, it is a bit old CPU, that is why a Pi5.
On the other hand, RK3588 boards come with dual ethernet (2.5G) and also available with 16GB or 32GB RAM, that is great for not only NAS but many virtual machines as well. I run NAS as virtual machine, but needs porting x86_64 to aarch64 (Debian Bookworm).
