Forgive my inattention. I've just checked the output table in the documentation. What I thought was GPIO0-1 is actually GPIO44 45.
correct in config.txt to

dtoverlay=i2c0,pins_44_45

Now LCD start working on I2C0.

the readme contains descriptiin what each overlay is doing.
If you rhink you'll need that ... I would do all this from my custom overlay.
