I assume you missed the title where I mention it's a rpi 5.

You assume correctly. IS there a strong reason for using a Pi5 or is it just because that's what you have?
I'm a little confused about what I need to do, do I "Configure as USB ethernet or serial gadget" on my pc's operating system or what?

Some models of Pi can act as a USB device including as an ethernet adapter and a serial port. Once set up on the Pi (there's at least one guide on the forum for the ethernet gadget) the USB host sees it the same as it would see a "real" USB serial port or USB ethernet adapter.

Both the Pi and thye USB host treat it as they would any other device of the same type.

Beware though that Windows is incresingly problematic with the ethernet gadget.
I happen to have a dual boot system. I have two spare usb 2.0 headers, can they provide enough power for my pi 5?

Don't know. You need to check your motherboard manual to see how much current they can supply. As for the Pi 5, 5A is the recommendation but it will only use what it needs. See https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentati ... quirements
Also how much of a limitation is the boot partition being read-only really?

Probably none. In normal operation (and assuming the user hasn't changed/added things) there are no writes to the boot partition unless required by an update. The root partition on the other hand has constant/frequent writes the overlay redirects those into RAM which has two major effects: 1. you'll eventually run of out RAM, and 2. all writes are lost at shutdown/reboot.
Yeah I want to use the pi 5 since it's the only one I have. The ports don't seem to support even close to 5 amperes. Could I get power from a sata or molex cable instead with some kind of an adapter?
