the shape of the BAR Plus does not seem ideal for plugging into a Raspberry Pi.

I have one of these and it's fine. Obviously it needs to be in one of the two higher usb ports if you want to use the other port, but that's pretty common.
I have some more bulbous usb sticks that impinge in multiple directions.
