Troubleshooting • Re: 2017 model 3B+ can’t upgrade 2019 OS now can’tdo a fresh install

My trusty Pi is acting like an Apple product. It says it is too old to upgrade (upgrade of OS fails saying there is no longer a repository or something like that for my OS).

So, I dashed my files and figured I do a fresh install on the same 32GB SD card. I picked the 32 bit OS with bookworm in the name a selected Pi 3. It builds the card OK but I just get 3 flashes on the activity led and no boot. I tried on another Pi and got the same result. I also tried another SD card that also used to work with the same result and 3 different power supplies that also used to work. I also tried downloading the 32 bit image (bookworm) that claims to work on all devices and used etcher to load two different cards with the same 3 flashes of death result.

Then I tried a legacy version and loaded it onto one card and it booted and said it was repartitioning then it would reboot. Which it did then said it was starting the desktop and then stopped driving video and the activity light turned off.

What is the deal? Is this the Apple model when I need to buy a new machine or is there something dumb that I’m missing like the new OS requires a 5A power supply instead of 2.5A

I won’t buy another Pi if they only last a few years. If I can’t get this figured out, I’ll just send them to electronic waste disposal.

Any ideas would be great
The OS , bookworm or any other, requires 0 amps to run. The hardware needs amps. And no pi requires 5 amps to run either.

3 flashes in a Pi 3 means it is not finding some os file to boot, if I am not mistaken.

If it is, why it would work once and not again, I don't really know, but if multiple cards have failed to boot it that way, either the pi has, or is going, bad, or maybe the SD card socket got damaged somehow? If the solder joints are cracked or loose, any movement could cause it to disconnect, so it boots, does it's thing, says it'll reboot, but then it moves and will it make proper contact so the pi says it can't find the file in the card with the flashes?

Just a wild guess really.

Since you have another Pi, try the same SD card that will not boot on the Pi 3 on the Pi 0. If it boots, then we know it's not the card. If it does not, then it indicates the SD card may be at fault.
