The "pulling of the rug" is exactly that. When 'picotool' uploads over USB the Boot Loader resets the Pico when the upload completes, the previous BOOTSEL disk suddenly disappears, and the Pi can't then access that disk to set the dirty flag because it no longer exists.Let me just say, I'm not sure, but could you please clarify what the rug pulling usually is?
The upload appears to confuse the USB host, and dmesg seems to say SD card boot sector can't be read to mark the filesystem dirty. Could it be general noise on the bus causing issues?
This is well known behaviour but many may not know of it because it is usually benign, has no adverse consequences. But today, in this case, it did have adverse consequences.
It was working previously and it's been working since so I guess I have to put it down to one of those random borkings which can occur from time to time.
